Tree Preservation Order

A legal order made by a local planning authority under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 to protect specific trees, groups of trees, or woodlands from being cut down, topped, lopped, or uprooted without consent. Carrying out prohibited works to a protected tree is a criminal offence with fines of up to £20,000 in a magistrates' court.
